What began your tastes in music and inspired you to become involved in composing?

My father was a singer who loved to sing classical style songs. He wanted me to accompany his songs with my piano. When I was 6 or 7, my father persuaded me to play piano though I didn’t want to at the time. (Laughs.) But he took me to my piano teacher’s home, which was my first music experience. I became a composer sometime after I graduated from college. Mr. [Yasunori] Mori, my manager, discovered me through the amateur band I was playing with at the time.

The group, and eventual pairing that you’re with, See-Saw, how did that begin with you and Chiaki Ishikawa [See-Saw’s vocalist]?

At first, she and I were not members of See-Saw. It was originally a band of six girls. I joined the band five years after it was first formed. After I joined, along with being a composer, we started making original songs and performing. At the time, it was difficult finding a good vocalist for the band, but after three years Chiaki joined the band. Through the years, the original 6 members left and now it’s currently just me and her.

What were some of the composition challenges that you faced for these anime: Noir, Aquarian Age, .hack//SIGN?

I care about how I create the concept of for each anime musically. For Noir and .hack, they were very conceptual. The director [for Noir and .hack//SIGN], Koichi Mashimo, had a very clear image of the particular world and concept for each series. I found it difficult to create those particular images through the music as I wanted to relate it to those anime, because the feeling of animation can change very dramatically depending on the music.

How did you feel about doing your first album, Dream Field, in nearly a decade with See-Saw?

After taking a break from the first two albums, I was very happy to get back on working with compositions for See-Saw again. Since I can work very liberally on my music with See-Saw [outside of obligation to anime music], I’m very excited about creating and performing my own compositions. I can realize how much I appreciate music from my involvement with See-Saw.

In your work on .hack//sign a few of the tracks, such as the opening and a few others are completely in English. Other composers are also using English as well as other foreign languages in their work. What are your thoughts on the increased use of languages besides Japanese in anime compositions?

Sometimes in Japanese music; particularly in anime music, the producer dislikes the use of Japanese lyrics in songs because they feel the language disturbs the animation. With the Japanese listener paying attention the lyrics, some feel it may disturb the elements of the anime such as the drama, progression, and background. So particularly in my case, I’ve been told sometimes by producers and directors [of anime series] to avoid using Japanese lyrics in songs. I think that in my or fellow composers’ cases, from our generation we grew up listening to Top 40 [American] music from the 80’s. That would be the reason why it’s much easier for me to come up with different lyrics. Since I was raised in Germany, I was brought up listening to Italian and Latin music. Because of my love for Italian and Latin music, I’ve integrated some of that into my music depending on where it would fit.

Are there any other foreign languages you would like to use that you have yet to use in your compositions?

Actually, I would like to try with Russian, though I am unfamiliar with it. I would like to do research on the Russian culture and study the language so that I may try it one day.

For an anime series set in another country, some of those involved in production of that anime will take trips to that specific location to grasp a feel on what they need to work with for that series. Have you traveled to other countries for an anime project? [Example: Going to France or Italy to find inspiration for Noir.]

[Laughs] For composers, we don’t get that opportunity much. If I want, I would have to go by myself.

“Fiction” being your first solo album is unique in the fact that Americans will first have a chance to purchase copies before it is imported. You have quite a growing fanbase in this country from anime fans and even non-anime fans due to your recognition from Noir and .hack soundtracks. What is your reaction to the appreciation that so many have for your music?

I wasn’t aware at all of how much anime that I was involved in became so popular in the United States. So I when I came over here, I was surprised. I was very worried that no one would show up to my concert. So since, I was going to release Fiction first in the U.S., I am very happy to receive the opportunity where American fans can listen to my music and hopefully enjoy it.

What were some ideas that you sought for the new songs in Fiction?

Since these new songs weren’t based off an anime soundtrack, I wanted to make these songs according to how I felt around that day and time.

There was a discussion at your focus panel about your preference for melody and your use of multiple and counter rhythms with various instruments. Are there any other instruments you would like to use in your music that you’ve yet to add in?

I have always had an interest in using the medium pipe. It is an Irish instrument sort of resembling a bagpipe. I have also thought of using other stuff such as Japanese based instruments, but it harms too much with my music. However, sometimes I try to use a

How did you feel about the crowd response from your AX concert?

I was really pleased and surprised by the crowd’s enthusiasm. I feel it depends on how much the audience can show their expression which is valued to musicians. So I really feel appreciated of their response.

What are some of your future music plans? Would they include more solo albums along the way?

For now, there are no plans for a solo album yet. I enjoy making [anime and game] soundtracks, however if I have the time, I would like to continue making more solo albums. For the rest of this year, I will be involved in making a soundtrack for an upcoming game. Hopefully next year I can do more anime music.
